Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are repeated, traumatic events in children’s lives that can affect their health and wellbeing into adulthood. ACEs involve episodes of physical or emotional abuse, neglect, witnessing domestic violence, and having family members who experience substance abuse, mental illness, or incarceration. Researchers believe that an understanding of ACEs is key to preventing a range of public health problems, including alcohol and drug use/misuse, high-risk sexual behavior, depression, and suicide.
